Columbus and Bartholomew County flood updates 12:30 a.m.

Bartholomew County Emergency officials are warning residents of a possible flood event overnight in Columbus and Bartholomew County.

Officials are expecting flooding in several areas of Columbus, including The Lagoons, Reo Street, Lawton Avenue, Bethel Village and the 1100 through 1800 blocks of Washington Street, Franklin Street, and Lafayette Avenue.

If you are in the area of the anticipated flooding, you should make preparations to evacuate your home in the event of rising floodwater. This evacuation is voluntary, at this time. Local law enforcement will be contacting residents in neighborhoods that are expected to be affected

Bartholomew Consolidated Schools have canceled classes tomorrow. They say that this will be an e-learning day but all school sites will be closed. Faith Lutheran Pre-school is also closing tomorrow.

Several Bartholomew County roads are closed at this time with additional closures expected. As of 11 p.m., roads closed included:

  • 225 N (St Rd 9 – Newbern Rd)
  • 400 N gates are closed
  • South Gladstone
  • 800 S. between SR 11 and 31
  • 900 N. between 200 E. and 300 E.
  • Southern Crossing

Roads with high water include:

  • 620 North (east of the Bridge)
  • 800 North (west of 100 W)
  • 400 West (200 S – 250 S)
  • 450 North (east of 225E and Tally Rd)
  • Newbern Road (north of the bridge)
  • 850 S (at 400 W)
  • 930 S ( 300W – 400W)
  • Rockyford Rd west of Marr Rd
  • Tellman Camp Rd
  • 600 E/850 S
  • 100 W between 650 S and 700 S

According to Columbus police, the anticipated flooding will likely impact the morning commute with the expected closure of the several roadways including parts of Jonathan Moore Pike (S.R. 46), State Road 11 in Garden City, Indianapolis Road, and Southern Crossing (County Road 400 South).

In the event of the expected road closures, the following detours are recommended into Columbus:

  • (from the North) Interstate 65 to the 76 mile marker (US 31 exit)
  • (from the South/East) US 31 to State Road 46 .

The Southern Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at Donner Center (739 22nd Street) in Columbus as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night should residents need housing assistance. Columbus Animal Care Services will also be set up at this location to provide assistance should it be needed.
